The File Work can’t prepare an image for these requirements
Good to know
Cropping isn’t possible here: your image is smaller than the required size in one direction, and The File Work doesn’t enlarge images.
The borders stay transparent, like the rest of your image.

Sharing with more detail
1 MB is good for sharing when detail matters. A phone photo keeps more of its pixels than at smaller limits, with only a small change in quality.
Supported formats
JPG / JPEG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC / HEIF photos (AVIF and GIF open too). HEIC photos are saved as JPG, which every site accepts. PNG has no quality setting, so a PNG can only get smaller by losing pixels; for a much smaller file, JPG usually looks better.
If 1 MB can’t be reached
The File Work lowers the quality first and then the dimensions, within safe limits: it won’t go below a sensible quality or shrink the image to a few pixels. If 1 MB would need that, it tells you instead of giving you a ruined image. When getting under 1 MB visibly lowers the quality, it shows you both versions so you can choose.
Questions
Can I compress an image to exactly 1 MB?
Never over 1 MB, and usually just under it, because it keeps the best quality that fits.
Will image quality change?
Only as much as needed. If good quality won’t fit, the image also gets smaller in pixels, and the result tells you what changed.
Does it work with HEIC?
Yes. iPhone photos open directly and are saved as JPG.
Is my image uploaded?
No. It’s compressed in your browser, on your device.
What happens if 1 MB can’t be reached?
You’ll be told before you download, instead of getting a ruined image. Try a larger limit, or crop the image first.
